Ema Shin is a Japanese born artist who has held exhibitions in Japan, Korea and Australia and participated in overseas artist-in-residency and teaching projects in Japan, Mexico, Spain and Kenya. Since 2009 she has been a resident in Australia with a studio practice that combines traditional Japanese printmaking with drawing, stitching, embroidery and tapestry.
Over many years Shin has been formulating shapes of female anatomy and body organs filled with designs of plants and flowers.
Her creations search for threads that connect our inner emotions with day-to-day experiences and express emotional and physical experiences using visually recognizable shapes of plant life and human anatomy. Shin experiments with traditions, materials and techniques to create artworks that express femininity, sexuality and domesticity.
