Workshop | Introduction to Weaving
Saturday 3 May | 10am - 4pm
Have you always been curious about weaving but want a taster first? Then this workshop may be for you!
Join artist Blake Griffiths for this full day introductory weaving workshop, designed for beginners to learn weaving on a frame, as a refresher, or for anyone wishing to make a small experimental sample. Participants can create their own woven textile piece using a simple frame. The workshop will include explanations of looms, demonstration of a shafted loom and the opportunity to understand the principles of different weaving structures.
Blake Griffiths is a weaver with a research interest in ‘textile thinking’. He uses a floor loom to transform materials and respond to place-specific textile histories. He studied advanced weaving at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India and has worked with museum collections across the country to curate exhibitions in response to environmental catastrophe, resource-extraction and the diverse creative practices and histories of regional and remote Australia.
View Griffiths' exhibition, Trading Cloth, currently on display in Gallery 2, and get insight into his varied weaving practice.
A weaving frame will be ready for you. Please bring any weavable materials you like to experiment with - from scrap yarn & cloth, natural fibres or recycled materials. The workshop will include a lunch break from 12.30-1.30pm.
