Join Michael Varcoe – Cocks, Associate Director, Conservation at the NGV for a discussion of the conservation of Tom Roberts’ Shearing the rams in 2007 . Varcoe – Cocks shares his knowledge of the artist and the examination of the painting and gives unique insights into his specialist practice and the treatment of this significant Australian icon.

 

Michael Varcoe-Cocks

Michael Varcoe-Cocks is the Associate Director, Conservation at the National Gallery of Victoria where he has been employed as a painting conservator for twenty years. His work has principally focused on collection-based research and the accompanying treatment of works produced between 1850 and 1950. He has personally undertaken treatment campaigns on numerous icons of the NGV’s collection including Tom Roberts Shearing the rams 1890.

Michael is a regular contributor to the field of technical art history and has published widely on the materials and methods employed by artist of the Australian impressionist movement. He was co-curator of the 2011-2012 NGV touring exhibition Eugene von Guérard: Nature Revealed.
